BIOGRAFIA.
Joe Cocker é uma lenda do rock dos anos 60… Sua voz e estilo inconfundíveis aliados à sua interpretação, onde como um mago ele mistura num mesmo caldeirão musical rock, soul, ritm and blues e jazz, fizeram dele uma das maiores estrelas da música… John Robert Cocker nasceu em 20 de maio de 1944, em Sheffield, Inglaterra. Em 1961, trabalhava de dia em um posto de gasolina e à noite cantava pop com The Avengers em bares locais. Após tentar carreira como cantor pop, Joe Cocker achou seu nicho cantando rock e soul em pubs ingleses à frente do grupo The Grease Band.. Com o passar dos anos, deixou o pop de lado, incorporando rock e soul em seu repertório. Sua versão de “With a Little Help from my Friends” alcançou o topo das paradas em 1968, um prenúncio do sucesso que a canção faria no festival de Woodstock, no ano seguinte. Em 1969, ele sairia dos Festival de Woodstock consagrado, após interpretação da sua releitura daquele sucesso dos Beatles, uma entre as cinco músicas cantadas por ele naquele domingo 17 de agosto, numa versão toda sua, irretocável… Era o seu hit de Número 1… Isso se tornaria sua marca registrada. Habilidosamente Cocker pegava uma canção conhecida e a transformava com sua nova interpretação em uma nova versão repleta de sentimento… Essa habilidade fez com que todos os holofofotes se voltassem para ele e onde quer que se apresentasse ninguém poderia perder suas apresentações… Delta Lady” foi seu outro hit em 1969, alavancando as vendas de Joe Cocker e With a Little Help from my Friends. Entretanto, cansado de viajar e consumido pelo uso de drogas, Cocker resolveu dar um tempo: demitiu sua banda de apoio e foi tirar férias, sem data de retorno, na Jamaica. Logo recebeu um recadinho em tom de intimação do seu empresário, Dee Anthony: Se não voltasse para honrar o compromisso de fazer mais uma turnê ele seria impedido de tocar pela ordem dos músicos. Cocker volta para Los Angeles rapidamente e convoca o guitarrista e pianista Leon Russel, para ajudá-lo a formar um conjunto capaz de enfrentar a maratona de shows. Russel correspondeu às expectativas. O músico conseguiu reunir, rapidamente, uma superbanda de dez músicos, que ajudou a escrever a história de Joe Cocker na discografia mundial. Eles gravam Mad Dogs & Englishmen, o terceiro disco do catálogo do músico, que é considerado uma obra-prima do rock na virada dos anos 60 para os 70. Cocker conquistou então os Estados Unidos em 1970, com sua versão de “The Letter, do the Box Tops”. Mad Dogs & Englishmen, que registrou a bem-sucedida turnê que levava o mesmo nome. Entretanto, Cocker viria a ter problemas com álcool comprometendo sua voz, o que resultou no fracasso dos álbuns e I Can Stand a Little Rain de1974, Jamaica Say You Will de1975 e Stingray de 1976… Em 1982, Cocker deu a volta por cima com o dueto com Jennifer Warnes, “Up Where We Belong”, tema do filme “An Officer and a Gentleman”. Em 1987 voltou às paradas com “You Can Leave Your Hat on” e “Unchain my Heart”, do álbum de mesmo nome, graças à inclusão das canções no filme 9 semanas e meia de amor. Ainda que não conseguissem repetir o sucesso do passado, Night Calls, de 1992, e No Ordinary World, de 2000, comprovam sua maturidade musical.
